| TIBER SPRINGS - MOUNT FUMAIOLO |
|
| Municipality: Verghereto - Località Balze
Here is born the Tiber, sacred to the destinies of Rome. The spring is in a beech forest on Mount Fumaiolo, 1268 metres above sea level. The river was named after Tiberino, a descendant of Aeneas who drowned in its waters. The Tiber is originated by two sources, 10 m away from each other, called "Le Vene". The river then drops down to wet the town of Balze. After 4 kilometres in Romagna, it crosses Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio and flows into the Tyrrhenian sea after 406 kilometres. |

|
| HOW TO GET HERE | | Take the SP road from Balze or Alfero, in the Municipality of Verghereto and follow directions for "Sorgenti del Tevere". After a short and suggestive walk you reach the site. In the Thirties, a marble column with an eagle on the top was erected by the springs. |

| NOTES | | The source of the Savio river is in the mountain range of the Fumaiolo, at the height of 1126 metres, in Montecoronaro, on the slopes of Mount Castelvecchio. The first part of this river of Romagna is called Fosso Grosso. The river then flows through Montecoronaro and Verghereto and takes the name of Savio. It flows for 126 kilometres and goes into the Adriatic sea near Cervia. Its small source is marked by an iron monument with a wolf, the symbol of Montecoronaro, and the rings of the "caveja", symbol of Romagna. |
