The original complex probably dates back to the 10th century. It was built on a previous Roman structure mainly as watch-tower due to its strategic position on a ridge dominating the Rabbi and Bidente valleys. During the 13th century it was the bone of contention between Forlì and Faenza. It was destroyed three times and in 1870 it was severely damaged by an earthquake. In the 1920s, the building, which by that time had gone to ruin, was purchased by the Federazione Provinciale Fascista of Forlì, which entrusted the architects L. Corsini and S. Baccarini with the task of giving it a new lease of life. Between 1924 and 1927, it was therefore completely rebuilt according to the neo-medieval style in vogue at that time and donated to Benito Mussolini, who turned it into his summer residence. A light with the intensity of 8,000 candles was placed on top of the tower to signal the presence of the Duce in Romagna. It emitted tricolour beams of light that could be seen as far as 60 Km away. Over time, the building housed members of the royal family, heads of state and ambassadors and in 1943 it was chosen as venue for the first meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Italian Social Republic. Today, just a few traces of the foundations and the remains of two pentagonal bastions still remain of the ancient manor. Guided tours to the park, in terms of environmental education and school tourism are organised, on request, for groups or classes.Strada Provinciale 126, 4 km past the town centre of Predappio, taking via Mazzini towards Meldola. |
